Why Astro is the future of static sites
We analyse the features that make Astro the most performant framework for modern websites, with zero JavaScript by default and the Islands architecture.
In the 2025 web framework landscape, Astro has established itself as the smartest choice for anyone wanting to build fast, accessible and long-lasting websites. This isn't hyperbole — the numbers speak for themselves.
The problem with modern frameworks
React, Vue, Angular — all great tools for complex web applications. But when it comes to company websites, blogs, portfolios or landing pages, these frameworks bring unnecessary weight: hundreds of kilobytes of JavaScript the browser must download, parse and execute before the page becomes interactive.
The result? Slow sites, poor Core Web Vitals scores and a negative impact on SEO. Google is explicit: speed is a ranking factor.
Astro and the Islands architecture
Astro solves this problem at the root with a radically different approach: ship zero JavaScript by default. Every component is rendered server-side and sent to the browser as pure HTML. No bundle, no hydration, no overhead.
The real magic is the Islands architecture: you can isolate interactive components (carousels, forms, menus) and load JavaScript only for them, only when needed. The rest of the page remains static HTML.
How it works in practice
- client:load — loads and hydrates the component immediately
- client:idle — loads when the browser is idle
- client:visible — loads only when the component enters the viewport
- client:media — loads only on certain breakpoints
Real numbers
In our Astro projects, we consistently measure PageSpeed scores between 95 and 100 on mobile — the hardest segment. With Next.js or Gatsby on the same content, we rarely exceed 80-85 without aggressive optimisation.
The Arco Milano site, built in Astro, achieved 100/100 on PageSpeed on both desktop and mobile at first launch, without any post-build optimisation.
When to use Astro (and when not to)
Astro is the ideal choice for: company sites, blogs, portfolios, landing pages, e-commerce sites with static catalogues, documentation. It is not the right choice for: complex web applications with global state, real-time dashboards, SaaS products with intensive client-side logic.
Conclusion
